So I'm starting up a blog again...man I haven't had one since..I think high school or middle school. Anyways, thought it would be another good type of release. Although it's something new to get used to, we'll see how it goes. I don't know what will come out in these either, so I guess I apologize in advance if they become rant-ish sort of thing. So here goes...
So just to get a basic running start of what's going on with me, so it might be a little easier to understand what will come later. First of all, I'm Korean, born in Korea and adopted when I was only a few months old. Never felt that my adoptive parents weren't my parents, so they're just mom and dad to me. I've been involved with music since I was seven, playing the piano and getting lessons. Once middle school came around, fifth grade to be specific, we were required to learn an instrument, so I initially chose clarinet. I kinda failed with that, couldn't really get to the high register, so I switched to tenor saxophone sixth grade. Then seventh grade my conductor wanted a baritone sax, so I took that on for the next two years. (Side note that adds to the story: I have an older sister (she's adopted too, but we're not blood related) learned flute when she hit fifth grade, but dropped it once she got to high school.) So eighth grade I was getting bored with bari sax, so I noticed that flutes got the more fun stuff, a.k.a. the melody. So I taught myself how to play the flute. I continued with flute after that. In the mean time I've also picked up the piccolo, and tried learning: trumpet, violin, guitar and oboe (but I failed at those too). So I never had private lessons for flute until I got to college.
While in college, I joined Asian Pacific Student Alliance. Ever since I first joined the end of my first year, I've been attached.
So now that catches up quite a bit I'll go on from there. So every year APSA hosts a Fashion Talent Show. For this, APSA contributes some things to it, like an acted section, dance, singing, modeling. APSA actually just started up an a capella group, which of course caught my interest, so I've been helping out with that a lot. They also create a dance routine with any member that's interested. So we get choreographers from local dance crews to help us out, so we primarily dance to hip hop. I also do the modeling, and this year I'm auditioning for the talent part of the show.
I'm kind of a perfectionist, so in my head I see how I want things to be, and strive for that, so I'm usually slightly disappointed when it doesn't come out that certain way. So I was thinking of auditioning with Josh Groban's, You Raise Me Up, but I've known that piece for a while, and I feel like it's overplayed by me, so I've been trying to come up with other options. Some that have crossed my mind are: Jay Sean: Down, Ryan Tedder: The Look, Taylor Swift: Love Story, Josh Groban: Awake. So breaking down each one and why it's troubling me...with Down, the sheet music I have for it is so simple that I want to embellish it, but I don't quite know how. The Look, I can't find piano sheet music for, and I can't find the chords anywhere. Love Story, I have sheet music, and lyrics from Romeo's perspective (thanks to Gabe Bondoc, youtube artist), but I don't like the sheet music I have because it doesn't sound right for some reason. Awake, it's very technical, and I have very little time to learn the piece. So I might just end up doing You Raise Me Up this one time.
As far as my whole flute thing, sometime I have my doubts because so many others started earlier than I did, and grew up with lessons. So I'm basically having to keep up while still having to build my foundation as a player. I was really wanting to get into the music performance major, but I didn't quite meet their "standards" they're looking for. So I don't know if that's just taken its toll on me or what..but with all this singing and whatnot, I'm taking a liking to it. With watching a bunch of youtube artists too is making me wonder. Either way, though, I feel like I'm not as good as them. *sigh* We'll see what happens..
That's all I really have for today...sorry it's a lot to ready, but I'm sure it'll start slimming down.
